The Armando Iannucci Shows

ThierryEnnui [Edit] [Delete] 16:35, 22 September '10

I've almost finished going through the DVD of this series, having not watched it since it was on back in 2001. Quite why this doesn't have the same huge cult following as The Day Today et al is beyond me, it certainly wasn't as easy as it should have been to get hold of the DVD.

Every episode is brilliantly constructed, what initially seems like a meander around a theme starts getting self-referential, and builds up a huge, weird design without ever getting too explicit or didactic about the theme he's going for (you couldn't give the episodes a one word title, as with Brass Eye). It's much tighter in its scripting than Time Trumpet, however great that show was too. I really love in comedies when there's a kind of manic pile-up of ideas that all tie up together, especially in what is ostensibly a sketch show of sorts. It's all very cleverly done, and I can't think of another show that has done what this show did, before or since.

Also, it's funny as hell, which is pretty much the main point of a comedy show. Has anyone else revisited this of late?
