Country-wide Oyster card on its way

Goofle [Edit] [Delete] 17:37, 19 October '10

"A Plastic smartcard acting as a single ticket for all buses, trains and trams in Britain is to be rolled out by the Government to help reduce fares.
Transport Minister Norman Baker told the Sunday Express the smart car will be “radical and visionary” and would allow seamless travel on one ticket between John O’Groats and Land’s End.
It will be based on the Oyster card used on London’s Tube, bus and rail routes and which has driven down the cost of travel in the capital. Mr Baker said Oyster had been a “fantastic” success.
Passengers will be able to “top up” cash on the smartcards, which will be the size of a credit card, at shops, stations, or by phone and online. They will be accepted on all forms of public transport, the Government hopes, with fares deducted by special card-reading technology on buses and trains.
Mr Baker said it would help revolutionise people’s attitude to public transport by removing the need to queue and by simplifying ticket prices. He has ordered officials to deliver the system “within a few years”."
