I want a 14" screen (could accept a 15") and good future proofed speed. I quite fancy a Sony VAIO E series because it comes in green and has an isolated keyboard. That comes in at around £850 inc. VAT when I spec it up with a core i5 2.5Ghz 4GB of RAM, MS Office DVDRW Drive and whatnot. it also has a multi-touch trackpad, which is cool.

This seems surprisingly good value to me.

I can get a macbook for £950 but that's a bit much for me.

What's out there that's better value than the Sony?
