Seeing as the word is near-universally pejorative these days blah blah blah, where do they come from?

Hasn't everyone in the world realised that if you wear a camera round your neck, a primary coloured kagoule (in case it rains), 'running' shoes for all that city walking, clutch a map, ride around in open top buses and horse-drawn carriages and eat in restaurants next to famous buildings with multi-lingual menus that include pictures of the food that everyone around you will want to scam, rob or laugh at you a bit?

They aren't even all American or Northern either
