Home recording – an idiot asks

Kitchmo [Edit] [Delete] 15:45, 1 April '11

OK, so I want to do a bit of home recording using my computer. The issue is that I’m totally new to this – every band I’ve been in has had someone who was more interested in that side of things so I’m at a bit of a loss at where to start. I’ve googled and read a few things but most of what I found didn’t actually help me very much. So home recoding people; what do you use re software? I’ve not got a huge budget, but I’m willing to spend on quality, what would you recommend on software (ie should I go for cubase or what?) and any other equipment which is useful? Also I’ve got a half decent mic I can use that is compatible with my computer which will do for now, but at what point should I think about different mics for different instruments?

Sorry for the rather boring Friday afternoon thread, but blame Bam, he inspired me to get my arse into gear and do something :-)
