Drugs and Musicians?

PenguinPants [Edit] [Delete] 08:34, 29 April '11

G'day,

I hope this topic hasn't been talked about to death, but bare with me!

I've been having intense debates with many over the idea of drugs making people more creative - especially musicians. As a musician (I play bass, Jazz - 2 years lessons etc) I find that any inspiration is good inspiration and musical competence is paramount when declaring a musician 'good or not'. Now I haven't taken many drugs (if any, weed that's about it but that doesn't count) and keep thinking that my mind is a bastion of conservation and regular-ness. It drives me crazy and makes my sad many a day since I really like to produce and write my own music. I have absolutely nothing against drugs or taking drugs (just never seem to have access to them - damn leafy green neighbourhood!), I just seem to find this idea a bit stereotypical.

So what do you proper music fans think? Do drugs make a better musician or is it just part of the culture?
