Went into a charity shop in the weekend, bought a book for £2. This was the exchange:

Me: Hi, can I buy this book please?
Staff: £2 thanks.
Me: [Hands over a £10 note, the only money I have on me]
Staff: Do you have any change?
Me: No sorry, just a tenner.
Staff: FINE. [Makes a big point of picking out each pound coin, thrusts them over and says with massive attitude] Thanks for taking all my change.

This wasn't some small boutique or market stall or something, this was a large secondhand clothing chain which sells some items for close to £100. And this dickslap throws a wobbly at me, a customer, over paying with a £10.

Ridiculous. Anyway, what's the general protocol? Anyone served a customer buying gum with a fifty quid note?
