Basildon Council has served eviction notices on the largest Gypsy site in Europe.

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 13:01, 5 July '11

Together with the police, they've put around aside £18million for the eviction, which will happen in September. 51 plots, and potentially hundreds of people will be turfed out. They own the land, but have never had permission to develop the land which is technically green belt.

This is an issue I'm quite involved with, so I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on it. FWIW, I understand that the council are obliged to uphold the law, whatever the cost. But at the same time, I think the site is a pretty practical one and perhaps should have been made legal ten years ago.
