A thread about languages

PocketMouse [Edit] [Delete] 15:29, 12 July '11

So, what foreign language abilities do DiSers have? As in, what languages, how good, how did you learn? Or what do you want to learn?

I've just realised how few British people I know (outside my course) who can speak another language reasonably. And seems like the number will just get lower with it not being compulsory anymore. Kind of depressing, no? See, I'm all for languages. Can I rant about them now? Excellent.

You can skip over this and just go with the first sentence, btw.

Because, I'm dying to know, does it ever actually feel worthwhile? Or is it just constant hell until you become actually fluent (if ever). Having my current ability would have seemed awesome to me a year ago, but is now just horribly depressing. I mean, it's not like I expected to be able to do much after a year, but it's just like I've gotten nowhere despite knowing so much more. I can't watch even a simple video and understand it, I never catch song lyrics, and I can't even read manga without consulting a dictionary every ten seconds and a lot of guesswork. Does it just continue like this? In another year am I going to be here going "I can't even manage to read this novel" even though I can do other things?

It's not going to get easier either, is it? If I've been struggling after a year of intensive learning, I'm always going to find it too hard to truly get anywhere with it, right? And now I'm probably doing the worst thing in learning another language instead of trying to get to a worthwhile point with the first. What's the point in speaking a few languages 'a bit' - there's surely so much more worth in learning one well? But still, I keep starting bits of this and that language and usually never go anywhere with them. I'm probably to indecisive. I want to learn so many.

---

Essentially, remind me why I'm doing this and tell me it'll be awesome in the future etc.
