Thursday Gaming Thread

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 11:22, 21 July '11

Goldeneye HD announced for Xbox and PS3. There was a thread about it somewhere. I reckon it'll be ok as they're supporting Move and the Wii title was pretty good. But then, you HD console owners get about 3 FPSs a week to play anyhow so it may end up being a pile of shit...

Battlefield 3 and Arkham City previews both sound good. Much is expected of both.

I read a good piece about games companies struggling to deal with the volume of in-house title development the other day. It showed which franchises were being worked on by external companies and their subsequent track records, and barring Retro studios it was very worrying. Some great titles like Luigi's Mansion, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil are being made by companies with a history of 5/10 SOCOM multiplayer games. Hmmm....

Nintendo hint that the WiiU will have more memory allowance as GC titles will be available to download on it's VC channel. They better let you redownload old ones you bought too. It's a bit galling though, this whole HD remake / original directors cut rerelease bollocks. Another way of making money from people's nostalgia - if Nintendo wanted to guarantee people bought the thing, they'd supply the console with every NES, SNES and N64 game available for free on it. Then you'd get HUGE buy up and interest in the store.

Also, multiple third-parties withdraw from developing on the 3DS. Which given that a lot of the upcoming titles are remakes anyhow, is somewhat worrying.

Talking of nostalgia, CVG looks back at classic PSOne games to buy on the Store - they forget WipEout 2097 mind, the FOOLS:

SUB-THREAD: RETRO GAMING
- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Do you actually like it? Do you do it? Or do you get bored by old games after 30 seconds and turn on Halo 3 instead?

Completed RE:Remake this week and was very impressed by it. I'm slightly annoyed at myself for playing it on Easy now as I predictably spent the whole game using a handgun and knife to save up my ammo and then had about 40 Magnum rounds, 17 First Aid sprays and an unused flamethrower with which to tackle Tyrant with. The story made loads more sense though than the original, the puzzles were tons better and generally it reminded me how much more satisfying games were when there was an aspect of restriction about them (like localised save points and the 6 item carry limit).

It's not without its flaws but I'd comfortably put it at 1 or 2 in terms of my favourite RE titles ever. It certainly felt the most like a RE game, something 4 didn't at times.

YOU?! You're all still skint after that Steam sale, right?
