Royal Mail and leaving parcels with neighbours

Not seen a thread on this so far.

Apparently Royal Mail wants permission to leave packages with neighbours if you're not in when it's delivered.

I think the main problem is though that as people order more stuff on the internet, postal delivery services haven't caught up- they deliver during the day weekdays, which is when most people aren't in the house as they work normal hours! Gaah!
Those red slips are a bit annoying, the depot where I live isn't that far, but if I didn't have a car it'd be quite a trek.

In Germany they have little locker/depot things where you can enter a code and pick up your parcel, seem pretty good. Or maybe massive letterboxes are the solution.

Anyone had any hassle with leaving packages with neighbours? I've looked after a couple of deliveries (including a small tree) with no probs, but I could imagine it being pretty annoying living next to someone who orders loads of stuff..
