Tram spinoff: getting rid of things to make way for the future, then bringing them back again

Loads of cities had trams, then we got rid of them for cars and now we're bringing them back.

Has this happened with anything else or what can you see it happening with in the future, if anything?

As an aside, if Abercrombie had had his way we (well, London) would be much more reliant on cars than we are now. Here's his post war vision of London
