How the fuck do they work?

Ok - I understand how light passed through certain materials will split into it's component spectrum-type things. Well I don't but if you say so - yeah fair enough.

But what the fuck is happening to make a big arch of colour appear in the sky? What exactly is refracting through what? Why the big arch?
