How many other people tried to update their iPhone last night for hours and hours to be continually met with "cannot restore iPhone: Server error"?

Why is it that a massive company like apple can fail to:
1. Properly load and performance test servers that will be involved a a massively popular download
2. In fact, why release the fucking thing at the same time all over the world? Surely a staggered release would have been better?
