Saturday no-pageantry thread
The only threads used on Social in the last 2 hours concern London's great Tournament of Nations. Sadly, if they wanted to truly bring the world together, they'd allow competitors to represent themselves and not their territory of dubious allegiance - as it is, the Olympics are an explicit division of the world's people, a jingoistic emphasis of Team GB and Team USA and whatnot, over and above the personal pride of achievement that is integral to the Corinthian spirit and indeed the spirit of any truly universal competition. Only by releasing athletes from national bonds do we enable them to battle on global terms, without a vile supertext of representation. So has this Tournament transcended a pure celebration of human athleticism, and become a means to brace the national bicep, a political instrument and a grotesquely inflated show of power. At least the World Cup is explicitly about divides, rivalries and the glory of the sport itself. The Olympics are a fine tournament, but except in cases of rare and outstanding achievement, the sport is somehow subordinate to the pageantry.
I'm playing cricket today, you guys up to much? :)
