so......
we have been having building works going on at our block since last November.
This means we can't open the windows in our flat, the balcony is usable, very loud noise every weekday from 8 am to about 4pm (both myself and the girl work one day from home), workman walking past our windows constantly, scaffolding everywhere, etc etc etc.
since about march we have been in touch with the letting agents, and then later direct with our landlord about getting a rent reduction. He has been incredibly slow about responding, but eventually after multiple emails, on about 9th august he offered us one month's free rent as compensation.
we accepted this offer and informed him and the estate agents we wouldn't be paying rent for the month of 14th august to 13th
September.

In a separate issue, on 12th august we informed our estate agent and landlord that we would be moving out, and September 13th would be our last day at the flat. Upon hearing this our landlord said that he meant for the offer of one month's free rent to be on the basis that we continued staying at the property, as far as I'm concerned that wasn't mentioned in the offer which we accepted, so we didn't pay the rent for this month (as we have written confirmation that we don't have to pay this).

Today we get a letter from the estate agent's about rent in arrears (despite us informing them of the situation).
it's not totally surprising, but what do we do now?
I'm going with not paying, them taking it out of the deposit, and then us disputing that claim and going through the depositing schemes dispute people to try and get it back?

any ideas where we legally stand / how to proceed?
