The Fault in Our Stars

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 14:54, 20 June '14

Anyone read the book? Going to see the film? Done both?

I read the book when it came out on the promise that it was excellent, and I did think it was good - nice, Sorkin-esque dialogue, and a kind of grim humour despite the dark subject matter.

Saw the film though, and although in nearly every way it sticks to the book, something about the tone is totally adrift - it's all soft focus and everyone is alarmingly beautiful, it just seems to add a lot of glamour to terminal illness. I can imagine legions of teenage girls wishing to be sick so they can meet their own Augustus. Although, the last 30 mins was essentially inaudible thanks to the sounds from the audience of blown noses and open sobbing.
