reclaimed/re-appropriated words.
Now, I know this is the second thread like this I've started in the space of a few days but I genuinely would like some new perspective on this and I've just finished reading a blog post that was left in one of the other threads by DD that cast new light on a particular situation I've been mulling over in my head for a while. I work in a small, young office environment and supervise a handful of people, one of which is a friend of mine who is gay and uses the term 'gay' to describe things that are lame or whatever. I've always held back from calling her up on it due to the fact that (rightly or wrongly) I'm not comfortable (as a heterosexual male) in doing so. Recently, a girl has started working there who isn't gay, doesn't know the other girl is gay, and uses the term regularly as a pejorative term. I would have been confident nipping this in the bud were it not for the situation I described previously. I want to do the right thing but frankly I'm not sure I know what that is anymore and I'm not embarrassed to admit that I might be slightly out of my depth. Is it more straightforward than I think? Can I just ask the new girl to choose her language more carefully?
