would there have been any copyright stuff to deal with in using those? would they have needed permission?

equally, if you were to say, use the Homer Simpson character as a starting base for a character...but imagine him as a young man living in Cuba in the 50s or something (i don't know) very different to how he is, but playing on the fact that we know what he will become....

what would the legality of doing that be? are you using a character without permission?
