detecting methane which could mean some form of 'life', but what would actually happen on Earth if we found alien life?

Would we all just keep an eye on the BBC website to see what happens next, or would everything just stop as people tried to get their heads round the fact there was alien life out there? Would we all shit it because the aliens might kill us all? It'd be pretty weird.
