Nice small to mid-sized towns in the North of England

PocketMouse [Edit] [Delete] 12:18, 5 May '15

*North of England = above Leeds

Ideal population of around 5 - 15 thousand. Would consider a population of less if it has a sizeable employment source nearby or more if it still feels pretty small.

Must have *immediate* access to nice countryside. Train station or good bus service would be a positive.

Think along the lines of Richmond and Skipton.

I don't really know anywhere outside of North Yorks, so nowhere is too obvious.

Places I've only seen small parts of and/or have very vague memories of: Cockermouth, Barnard Castle, Hexham & Morpeth. Are they actually nice or do they just have deceptively nice bits?

Actual suggestions received gratefully.
