LONDON! The DiS winter warmer BBQ 2004
LONDON! The DiS winter warmer BBQ 2004
shadyadie by [redacted] November 26th, 2004

The DiS Winter Warmer BBQ 2004

MISTY'S BIG ADVENTURE
Fronted by Peel favourite Grandmaster Gareth. A nine piece alt-pop orchestra from Birmingham, musically they're almost impossible to pin down, having been bizarrely described as "Ween meets The Beatles meets Seasame Street meets Beck." Debut LP 'The Solar Hi-Fi System' was re-issued on Scottish label SL Records this year, and is already a bit of a classic.

KILLING MOON
Four south-east Londoners who not only claim to be a love child of Ian Curtis and Diana Ross, but are here to fight against meat-and-two-veg rawk and indie-schmindie no-hope guitar whining. Armed with a sound they describe as "forceful, streamlined and angular," you should probably catch them now before 2005 brings on the swarm of A&R buzzing around like a big load of great, big, buzzing bee things.

THE V.Cs
Blimey! They like The B-52s and Devo and most definitely do not like Jet. The V.Cs are lean, taught, precision-raid, electro surf-rock wig-out action; like Dick Dale careering through the set of a Tarantino-directed sci-fi B-Movie, in super-hero costume, chased by The Cramps.

PROZAK
South London 15-year-olds who found one of their songs played by Xfm after their guitarist thrust a CD into John Kennedy’s hands at an X-Posure Live night. Jerky riffs and powerhouse drums, like an anti-core and lovingly shambolic version of Ash. They don't play often, due to being too young to get into most London toilet venues. Oooh-errr.

HICKS MILLIGAN-PROPHECY
Have splendid song-titles such as 'Never The Bridesmaid (Always The Bride)' and 'Gap Kids Make Cracking Crack Whores'. DiS reckoned their 'When Icebergs Attack' demo was "the sound of a band mashing danceable post-punk influences with a bit of originality to go with it. Very, very dark pop." A synthpop Hives?

HANDBAGS AT DAWN
Your new favourite band were founded by Dublin-born singer/songwriter Shane Rennick, who moved to London in 2002 to play his ranty folk-punk on the open mic circuit. Now a finely honed 4-piece, their demo CD 'The Guantanamo Babes EP' was recorded in March 2004 at Din Studios in London's Docklands, and perfectly captures this young band's edge, bite, and hook-laden tunefulness. The lyrics are a bit radio-unfriendly, mind you.

+ DJs Eddie Argos (Art Brut), Drowned In Sound and FROG.

Dear unsigned pop groups,
This is also a good opportunity to get copies of your demos to us in person, for future review/gigs.

PS. Yes, that is blatantly a ploy to get more people along to the gig. Ahahahahahah.
