The Weekly DiScussion: readership tipsters, get tipping for 2008
The Weekly DiScussion: readership tipsters, get tipping for 2008
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver December 13th, 2007

With the regular spew of end-of-year best-albums lists subsiding, attentions across the industry are now turning to who will be hot – and who will be not – in 2008. Tips, the tastemakers call ‘em, these lists of unknowns mingling with the certainly going tos. We’re not oblivious either, and will be delivering the DiS opinion on next year’s potential Best In Show next week. But in the meantime…

We’re after your tips for next year, since we’re forever reading about new bands on the site’s music board, following links posted by you guys. Don’t worry about thinking if your tips are commercially viable propositions (pretty much a prerequisite when considering these things within the industry) – we’re more interested in the bands you’d ideally like to see improve their profile in the coming twelve. If they’re on the bottom rung, maybe they can step up a couple; middle-ladder acts, perhaps they’ll be gracing the third stage at Reading and Leeds come the summer?

Who’ll be next year’s Foals, the band that’s elevated from next-to-nothing mainstream obscurity to sound-tracking the first sexual fumbles of a thousand teenagers? Who’ll step up to the plate stateside, like Gallows have in 2007, and take their British rock to the Warped Tour masses? Where’s the next Adele coming from, the next soulful solo star to win a Brit before they’ve even delivered a debut album? The next Jamie T? The next Klaxons? Et cetera… we could relate one to another endlessly, but perhaps your favourites for next year are of an entirely singular style? Could Munch Munch step into the shadow of Deerhoof, cast for so long from overseas without anyone to fill it domestically? Could Beestung Lips make good on their fiery potential and produce an Orchestra Of Wolves-bettering album?

G’wan then: post your ear-t’-ground tips for 2008 below, with links and the like, and us office tap-tappers will click through and listen. It’s not like we’ve all that many albums to listen to right now – the industry’s pretty much already entered its temporary period of hibernation ‘til the first few weeks of January. We look forward to your ear-opening suggestions!
