Mixtape #30: Katy Perry
Mixtape #30: Katy Perry
eurydice by Cate Blanche December 3rd, 2008

She stormed the charts this year with her love it/hate it single 'I Kissed A Girl'. Now bi-curious pop princess Katy Perry talks DiS through her ten favourite tracks.

---

1.Paul Simon – 'Something So Right'

One of my favorite producers and leader of the Katy Perry movement, Glen Ballard, played this song for me one day on his beautiful white piano at his white studio, The High Window, and the lyrics resonated with me. Sometimes it is hard to get used to something so right. Girls have a lot of layers to get through sometimes. And Paul Simon is the greatest.

2.LMFAO – 'I Am NOT A Whore'

These guys are fucking rad, those dirty sexy hard electro beats with even dirtier nasty ass lyrics, ugh, so good. They are actually hip hop guys, they just put a new twist to their act with some mad catchy homemade electro sounds, they like to call it "New 80s" I just call it "UGHHHH!"

3.Patty Griffin – 'Tony'

While learning the art of crafting a song in Nashville, I came across her and her songs. She is an influential part of my story songwriting. She and Jonatha Brooke are female songwriting gold.

4.Chromeo – 'Bonafied Lovin' (Yuksek remix)'

I thought I was sold on the LA Riots remix of this Chromeo fav until I heard this version by Yuksek. Whhhaaat. I was sleepin! Yuksek is comin’ up on the French electro tip, running a one man show and def holding it down with the remixes too. It’s just so smooth and sexy and dare I say...techno! Peep the Lolipop remix where he gets his funky techno fresh on.

5.Notorious B.I.G. – 'Hypnotize (Mia Moretti remix)'

90’s what!!! I love that crazy synth sound, it sounds like robots makin babies. Speaking of babies, my favorite part in the song is the 'ménage a trois' It is looped twice and is slowed way way down on the second one. Those sexy little floppy noises (a la Freaks of the Industry) work so perfect for the freak nasty nast vibe.

6.Queen – 'Killer Queen'

The reason I do music is because of Freddie Mercury. His lyrics and his presence cannot and will not be beat. You go, Freddie. RIP.

7.Dead or Alive – 'You Spin Me Round'

1980’s one hit wonderful. Nothing more nothing less.

8.Amy Winehouse – 'Valerie'

'Valerie' is my favorite song that Mark Ronson produced with Amy. It’s one of those songs you put on and you can’t help but start dancing, it’s super cheery and bright, but Amy brings this darkness and sadness to it at the same time.

9.Bonde Do Role – 'Solta O Frango (Mia Moretti remix)'

I love this band, I get a little bit of a Justice vibe from them. It translates to "Free The Chickens" which made me think it’s the Brazilian version of 'Who Let The Dogs Out'. To me it’s a party jam, backyard style mom's out of town let’s have a kegger rage...Free the Chickens, Woof Woof!!!! It also could be a political statement, but I’m taking the low road.

10.Beach Boys – 'California Girls'

Duh.

Katy's second single 'Hot N Cold' is out now.
