Invada Invasion of DiS: a mixtape from Malakai
Invada Invasion of DiS: a mixtape from Malakai
lukowski by Andrzej Lukowski September 24th, 2009

You know the score by now. Probably. On Monday we talked to Invada boss Geoff Barrow, on Tuesday Thought Forms gave us their guide to Bristol, yesterday Crippled Black Phoenix hit us up with a beef and cheese based Christmas recipe... Saturday is the Invada Invasion itself, and perhaps tomorrow those nice Fuck Buttons boys might be dropping in for a chat. For today, though, feast yer senses on this here mixtape, brought to you by Invada-signed beat-dealers Malakai (vocalist Gee pictured at the top there).

---

1 - Homeless beatboxer in parking lot.

Hearing real soul is almost a novelty nowadays so we're excited to pass this one on. Human beatboxing has lost a lot of impact since the swarm of Rahzel-alikes started chewing our ears but every so often someone comes around to remind you what it's all about. You can almost hear the last 20 years of this guys life here. He's since been signed to Stones Throw for an LP out soon (ah, there is a God then). Also check him doing 'Ghost Riders on the hip'

2 - Breakout: 'Gdybys Kochal Hej'

Polish heavy psych tune from '69 - singing about making hay (I think? - we don't speak Polish) for the regime of the time.. Great haircuts, farms windmills and chickens

3 - The Atlantics: 'Bombora'

Picked this album up when I was out djing in Australia a few years ago on the strength of the cover and was not disappointed. In our book this is the best surf tune ever made and the video is pretty good also.. Drum kits, Sixties VW Beatles, surfing and records being pressed: what more could you wish for? It's wild, baby..

4 - Dum Maro Dum

Bollywood breaks and beats! First heard it on the radio a couple of years back and did a sneaky 2580 on me mobile, It's from the film Hare Raam Hare Krishna and owing to the subject matter (you'll see) I raised a few eyebrows and chuckles at my corner shop when I asked about it, we used it on one of the Malakai mixtapes.

5 - The Pharcyde: 'Drop'

Loads of people tried to rip this type of video off but this is this first and the original. Beat is by Jay Dilla (or Jay Dee as he was known then) - RIP - and classic Pharcyde looking cool as fuck

6 - Shocking Blue: 'Love Buzz'

Original 'wild bitch on mountain top' vocal, great guitar riff, sampled by late Eighties/early Ninties Dutch underground hip hop legends 24K for their track 'We Have No Enemies' and covered by Nirvana, I love women with balls (I'll leave you to add your own punchlines)

7 - Tame Impla: 'Half Full Glass Of Wine'

Aussie tripped out groover brilliant riff and starts fast then slows down like they've changed their minds about which track to do, which we like.

8 - Mugwumps: 'Do You Know What I Mean'

Great track from Mama Cass's pre Mamas & Papas collective. After being in The Big Three (check that stuff too) the Mugwumps showed Cass had some great things to come and put out some class tunes like this one and the beautiful and haunting 'Come Away Melinda'. Also check Cass doing 'Different' on Pufnstuf.

9 - Stark Reality: 'All You Need To Make Music'

Years ago it was acceptable for an old man to be in his living room surrounded by various non-related children whilst completely unsupervised. Zip through this though to find Stark Reality's little Sesame Street type interspersions, tooo dope!

10 - Mills Brothers: 'Till Then'

If this doesn't do it for you then there really is no hope. If it does then enjoy some other posts of their stuff - my other faves are 'Jungle Fever', 'Swing it Sister' and 'Yellow Bird'.

11 - Beat Street Roxy Battle

Everybody bangs on about Wild Style being the seminal B-Boy movie but they never had Wildstyle on Beta at my local video store in Bristol so the one copy of Beat Street spent most of the time at my yard. This reminds me of being 10 and getting into tunes and becoming a b-boy. Here Beat St do battle with the New York City Breakers - HEAVY.

12 - The Wurzels - 'I am a Cider Drinker'

That Alan is a bit of a cock at the start but wait till 0.25 for the realness - proper job mind!
