Lostprophets' Favourite Album Covers
Lostprophets' Favourite Album Covers Photography by Cate Blanche

Justice – Cross I chose this one just because of how simple it is with the iconic the 3D black cross. It’s one of those covers where I think ‘"Fuck, why didn’t I think of this?!" I like simple, minimal artwork cause it's really hard to do and quite often can easily end up looking crap, but when they get it right, like this cover, its just genius. Photography by Cate Blanche

Muse - Absolution This is a great record cover, one reason being I love Sci-fi and it’s such an ominous cover. I love the pilot looking up and surrounded by shadows of flying people. Its just amazing and I wish I had thought of it. Photography by Cate Blanche

Fucked Up - Chemistry of Modern Life I really love photography alongside other kinds of artwork, so when there is one photo which just says it all I think it's fantastic. This goes so well with the title, and the band name and the record as a whole. Photography by Cate Blanche

Artic Monkeys – Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not I love the simple photo of a guy smoking – it's genius. It's like an attitude. I don’t like their 2nd record cover though, they took far by trying to do the same thing again, a simple candid… it felt like they couldn’t be bothered and looks like a picture from a holiday instead of the iconic cover on the first album. Mylo – Destroy Rock & Roll This is David Carson who is a great graphic designer who is really into print and typography. The bold sans serif font makes such an impact and the splash of colour really stands out. We always tried to play with colours on our own records and variate between dark and light. Lostprophets – thefakesoundofprogress I like this one cause if you didn’t know us you would think it was a drum and bass record. We also did it on vinyl which was awesome. When I made it I was hugely into hip-hop and drum and bass and I wanted the cover to stand out. We didn’t want to be like every other rock band out there and at the time it was so different Photography by Cate Blanche

Interpol – Turn On The Bright Lights Well, you cant fuck with red and black right haha? When you can get it all in one photo it's just wicked, you don’t have to do anything or add anything else. It’s enough, perfect, wicked. Photography by Cate Blanche

Outkast – Stankonia It's not often, and believe me we’ve tried, that you can get away with a band photo on the cover of your record. Until the last minute of our new one we had ourselves on the cover but it's so hard to do without it looking like you’re something you’re not. The Outkast one has a wicked attitude to it, it's in no way cheesy or patriotic, there’s just a vibe that comes from it. Those guys are so cool. Photography by Cate Blanche

Limp–Bizkit – Significant Other It might be a scandalous one but I love the artwork. It's done by a really amazing NYgraffiti artist called neo 1, his work is amazing and always done huge canvasses. I did a degree in graphic design and I was obsessed with magazines which featured his work. When that record come out I remember thinking ‘fucking hell, it's him.’ You can't see that art for anything other than it is; as a piece of art on its own, its awesome. You can watch a video of it being made on youtube, its on a 40ftx60ft wall... amazing. Photography by Cate Blanche

Chromeo – She’s In Control The only reason I bought this record was 'cause of the cover! We were in the states filming and I went down to a record store to get some music. I was looking through some stuff 'cause I didn’t know what to get and I saw this. I knew nothing about the band but I loved the cover so much that I bought it and lucky for me it was an awesome record! Photography by Cate Blanche

Lost Prophets' Ian Watkins, who studied graphic design and creates the bands artwork and merch, talks to DiS about his ten favourite album cover art... Just scroll through the gallery above.

"I used to just look through records not knowing what I wanted. I just liked to peruse the album section and whatever album artwork grabbed me I used to get. If the band photos weren’t cool I wouldn’t buy it either, haha. I might love the artwork and then turn it around to check out the band and if they looked a bit shit it would put me off. It’s weird to think like that and it makes me feel shallow but it’s not, when you’re a kid you want to look up to a band.

Every Saturday I would go to Cardiff and do that. It’s a shame now that everything’s saturated and there's no mystique left to artists. These days they wanna put cameras in your bathroom and watch you take a piss, there’s no mystery left.

It's happening already that people don’t care about artwork but to me, it was just as important as the music. I remember doing the ‘Start Something’ record and compiling the inlay which is a collage of two years of our lives. It was so much fun. I’d sit there for hours looking at the booklet and all the little pictures. I did that to all the albums I bought… I’d come home with a record I’d bought, play the music and look through the booklet whilst I listened. When bands spend time on it it's such an awesome thing and I feel sad that the new generation don’t have that.

I'd like to say artwork will become precious. People who care enough will always find ways to make sure the aesthetics and music go hand in hand. For all our future releases we are going to make it so that the art is a counterpart to the music and to understand a record fully you need both parts.

You look at some album covers and they’re just so lazy… and blatant in the audience they want to target. A lot of covers try and promote a lifestyle and it feels empty.. it’s a cop-out."

Ian's also a DJ and remixer under the guise of L'amour La Morgue
