Mixtape: Factory Floor's Favourite Non-Traditional "Love Songs"
Mixtape: Factory Floor's Favourite Non-Traditional "Love Songs"
sean by Sean Adams April 6th, 2011

A mixtape and a competition from Factory Floor...

This week, DiS' favourite new band (probably) Factory Floor, released their kraut-thumping 'R E A L L O V E' on 12" vinyl. This new track really took us by surprise, in the best possible way. It's a ginormous dose of party grooves whirled into a drone-tinted hypnotic beast of a song. And the remix of it, which features on the flipside, is, somehow, even bigger.

Have a listen to the latter:

In this week's singles column, I suggested the track was perhaps an ode to Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' and on asking someone close to the band, they could neither confirm nor deny this, so I asked if the band could put together a 10 song mixtape of their favourite non-ballady "love songs". They said yeah, and also offered us copy of 'R E A L L O V E' on lovely 12" vinyl to give away.

Competition

To enter, to win 'R E A L L O V E' on a slab of vinyl, simply click the like or tweet button on this article, and tell us what your favourite non-traditional love song is. Winner will be picked at random on Monday 11th April at midday.

Without futherado, here's Nik Colk Void from Factory Floor's mixtape and commentary, plus a closing track chosen by Gabe Gurnsey, FF's drummer.

You can click the YouTubes to listen along below or via this Spotify playlist (with a few substitutions, sadly).

Nic Factory Floor

1) R E A L L O V E ~ L O V E B U Z Z - NIRVANA

I will never grow out of this track. It blows hot and then it goes cold, fast yet slow, the repeated anticipated riff supports Kurts words 'Would you believe me when I tell you You're the queen of my heart ..Please don't deceive me when I hurt you, Just ain't the way it seems...can you feel my love buzz.... (yes I can!)

2) R E A L L O V E ~ D R U N K E N B U T T E R F L Y - SONIC YOUTH

...'I love you I love you I love you...what's your name' ....Kim meet Kurt, Kurt meet Kim x

3) R E A L L O V E ~ H O T O N T H E H E E L S O F L O V E - THROBBING GRISTLE

The kick renders in like a pulsating heart beat simulating that pounding feeling when we feel love. In my mind I can visualize Cosey's moist lips seductively mouthing 'I'm hot on the heels of love', 'waiting from help from up above' again and again, wow she sends me into a provocative love trance..... I feel it TG! This track is only 4 and a half minutes long, but i could listen to this for hrs without it actually going anywhere!

4) R E A L L O V E ~ I F E E L L O V E - DONNA SUMMER

David Bowie said “ One day in Berlin ... Eno came running in and said, 'I have heard the sound of the future.' ... he puts on 'I Feel Love', by Donna Summer ... He said, 'This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.' ...he was so right!

5) R E A L L O V E ~ I L O V E Y O U - PSYCHIC TV

Sweet melodic sound ...hey wait is that an electric drill i hear!? Genesis P'Orridge has our heads cradled snug into her bosom, sending us into a deep nightmarish sleep. He/She loves us ... i know. It is twisted and unnatural to juxtapose dreamy melodic guitar against a choppy machine like sample, oh so pure and evil...I would never do such a thing!

6) R E A L L O V E ~ B I Z A R R E L O V E T R I A N G L E - NEW ORDER

I Love this song so much! The is the 'classic' non traditional love song. On my list of non traditional love songs you will notice where I can, i have put live youtube clips not official videos. I've done this so we can get a better judgment to if these love songs are sung from the heart. If you notice on this NO clip, there's a bizarre love triangle happening all by itself. Check out Peter Hook's death stare at Bernard when he starts his crazy dancing, Bernard totally unaware shows his adoring love to keyboard player Phil Cunningham. Threes always brings tension.

7) R E A L L O V E ~ CHEREE CHEREE - SUICIDE

In my mind one of the most beautiful dark love songs ever written. The amazing thing about Suicide is as their songs age, they deliver a brand new context from its original concept. This is why Suicide in my eyes will ironically live forever! Watching a you tube clip of Alan Vega and Martin Rev performing this track back in 1980 sounds soft seductive vulnerable and sincere, watching a clip from 2005 it kind of sounds perverted, creepy and darker than before.

8) R E A L L O V E ~ T H R O U G H T H E S K I E S F O R Y O U - JOHN MAUS

Think this is my ultimate non traditional love song! 'When I look in your eyes, It's just like the dark night , And baby, you make me cry' He is a genius! No really he is, he's a political philosophy and theory instructor at the University of Hawai! In other songs he sings about his grandma peeing in his hands. I love John Maus, all his lyrics are dark and twisted to some extent simply honest, sung from the heart.

9) R E A L L O V E ~ K A T E I W A I T - ARIEL PINK

I like to think this is Ariel's love song to Kate. Kate being Ariel's female self. In all these nontraditional love songs they either tease the listener into a darker place, or have an underlying frustration and anxiety. I don't think Ariel is frustrated tho... I think he's just being himself.

10) R E A L L O V E ~ THE CORAL SEA - PATTI SMITH & KEVIN SHIELDS

Gabe's choice: No one reproduces love through sound better than Kevin Shields. His sequence changes evoke journeys, anxiety, euphoria, a soundtrack to the most abstract story of Love, The Coral Sea.
