DiSsers recommend... Quiet/LOUD songs
DiSsers recommend... Quiet/LOUD songs
AdamBoult by Adam Boult June 14th, 2011

A new community-powered feature on DiS kicks off with the best quiet-loud songs, as selected by the Drowned in Sound music board...

A few days ago DiS user manbearpig posted a thread looking for suggestions of songs with the "best quiet-loud moments ever." More than 50 tracks have been put forward so far. We've picked out a few highlights below, but you can also listen to (nearly) all of those mentioned on the thread on this Spotify mix, or, if you've used up your free Spotify hours for the month, this YouTube playlist.

Mogwai – ‘Christmas Steps’

Manbearpig's initial suggestion. He specifies 5m 5s in, the CODY version. (Iithica, in the first reply on the thread said: "I thought you would say ‘Like Herod ‘. I think Mogwai own the thread anyway".)

---

Pixies - ‘Tame’

Suggested by Furryboy. Suedeheadscot disagreed and opted for ‘Gigantic’, while QuiffProFro said "SURELY ALL OF THE PIXIES EVER?!?!" But seeing as Furryboy got in there first, we're going with ‘Tame’.

---

Nirvana – ‘Milk It’

Surprisingly there were only two Nirvana songs suggested. TheoGB went for ‘Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seatle’, and wirdsmith this.

---

Wedding Present - ‘Bewitched’

ThirstyDog: "Scared the shite out of me first time I heard it."

---

Mono - Yearning

colossalhorse: "I love the way it explodes out of nowhere, slightly off beat. It always catches me surprise no matter how many times I hear it."

---

McLusky – ‘Slay’

As suggested by musefreek2011 and red_weather, who said: "When he whispers something beyond hearing, and just as you're straining to hear it it explodes back in. Quality."

---

Mogwai - ’Helicon 1’

Seeing as they own the thread, here's another from them. Thosegoldsounds's says: "Put it on maximum volume, wait until THAT moment at 2:54 and melt into bliss. They've never bettered this tune, although they've spent a long time trying."

---

Besnard Lakes - ‘Albatross’

silks: "Features quite a special quiet loud moment- think it's around the 3 minute mark."

---

The Cure - ‘Subway Song’

Sloame_Ocean: "E.G. the scream at the end of the song. This was one of the first Cure tracks I ever heard and I knew I'd love them immediately."

---

65daysofstatic - ‘Aren't We All Running’

Antpocalypsenow: "The piano teases you for just the right amount of time and then that little drum roll and the guitars shred your ears into pieces in the best possible way. It's my default track to use to test if earphones are up to scratch for me."

---

Super Furry Animals - ‘Arnofio/Glo In The Dark’

AlphaDeluxe: "I've always loved the element of surprise, where the calmness of the first section is abruptly interrupted by the second."

---

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - ‘Art Star’

shoeshined: "Certainly not as good as some of the other stuff on here, but definitely the most fun."

---

Boris - Untitled

Steve13105895: "I remember them finishing with this at the Cargo in 2008. That tidal wave of guitar was the loudest thing I've ever heard."

---

The Mars Volta - ‘Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus’

ThisTemporaryLife: "I honestly think Mars Volta are runner-up winners of this thread. I went to my iTunes to remember ‘Son Et Lumiere’ and remembered ‘Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus’ which, OH GOD."

This thread is on-going, so feel free to get involved and share your favourite quiet-loud songs. Any threads started this week you think might be a contender for next weeks DiSser's recommend feature?
