David McAlmont on How To Sing 'Yes' (Video)
David McAlmont on How To Sing 'Yes' (Video)
eurydice by Cate Blanche October 10th, 2015

Following our epic chat with McAlmont and Butler, David McAlmont talks you through how to sing 'Yes'.

"My first singing teachers were the singers I liked in my childhood/ teenage years. When I was trying to keep up with Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand and Whitney Houston it became important to me to find a way to do what they could without the pain. So my first lessons were self taught pain avoidance.

I first paid for singing lessons in my early twenties and discovered great tips and exercises. In the late eighties a classical tenor, Stephen Gardener, taught me how to abandon slavish pronunciation to enable better notes.

In the mid nineties, Tona de Brett taught me about the diaphragm, the importance of fitness and hydration. Then I worked with opera singer Lizzie Majella Byrne in the late noughties, and she taught me Bel Canto techniques.

People kept asking me for lessons. I declined because I can't play piano; Marcella Puppini told me that I didn't have to. Coaching others has made me a better singer. I know how to sing 'Yes' now. Twenty years ago it was trial and error. I can explain how to others now, because I can finally explain it to myself."
