DiS Launches New 'CORE Night In London
DiS Launches New 'CORE Night In London
DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking November 26th, 2003
Drowned In Sound and Last Band Standing present for your listening and dancing pleasure the first in a series of monthly live music nights focussing on louder, faster, crazier, more chaotic music than anything we’ve brought you before.

The night is called ‘CORE and, as the name suggests, aims to bring you the very best in hardcore and its many sub-genres (emo-core, metal-core, extremo-core… you get the idea!). And because it’s our first night we want to make it a little more special so we’ve asked all the bands to cover a Christmas song, either in their own style or the style of the original, whether it be a jingle, a carol or a Cliff Richards classic! And to make it all the more memorable, Santa Claus himself has agreed to come down, rock out and hand out some free festive goodies! (Although he’s not told us what, exactly)

So, along with four of the most exciting live bands we’ve heard this year this is sure to be a top night of crazy, festive rock ‘n’ roll debauchery.

When and where?

Tuesday 16th December
@ The Electrowerkz, 7 Torens Street, Angel (upgraded from Islington Bar Academy!)
Nearest tube: Angel (Northern Line, Bank branch)
Tickets: £5 on the door - now no longer available on the DiS Ticket Shop

Who?

The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg
Having spent the past two years terrorising the grief-holes of this insipid isle, The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg’s mind-bending fusion of energetic spazz-rock and complex craziness has been honed into a unique, jaw-dropping live show that’ll leave you gasping for breath! With a sound that twists and turns like The Blood Brothers in a scrap with Milwaukee mentalists Since By Man, these young Worcester-based lunatics’ recently-released debut for Undergroove recordings - ‘Everyone’s In Love And Flowers Pick Themselves’ - seems likely to turn the UK chaoti-core scene on its head.

The Birds of Paradise
Avante-noise sextet The Birds of Paradise are another act whose incendiary live show precedes them. Two months after they formed in October last year they played their first show at Sound Republic, Leicester Square in front of 500 people. Their explosive set saw them break four microphones, a keyboard stand, three cymbals, a snare and an arm. They were subsequently banned for life. Such a live show saw our very own Mike Diver declare them, “without doubt the greatest unsigned act that I have EVER witnessed”, describing them as a “100mph collision between a Converge gig and G.A.Y. at the Astoria!” They have a super limited edition 7” EP on pink vinyl set for release January 2004, coinciding with a two-week UK tour.

Silent Front
Taking that good ol' Dischord Records formula and melding it with the surging, chaotic melody of Shellac, South London’s Silent Front create the kind of off-focus din that’ll have you fidgeting and squirming 'til you’re up there dancing along and manically shaking your head to their erratic grooves. Having notched up amazing review after amazing review through some of the most passionate, sweat-breaking performances this side of Fugazi, it seems just a matter of time before these young guns are granted proper label support.

Face For Radio
We’re still not sure whether Face For Radio actually have a face for radio, but we’re damn sure they have the music for it. These Wolverhampton-ites craft the kind of jarring post-hardcore racket that is as beautiful and simplistic as it is technical and abrasive. One listen to their six-track demo, their vocalist catapulting himself through a melee of molten post-hardcore counterpoint and weaving off-kilter rhythms, and we knew we just had to have ‘em play our opening 'CORE night.

THE FUTURE OF DISCORE?
After this launch night we'll be bringing you further monthly nights with the finest 'core exponents in the UK. Any acts wishing to play future shows (and tours too!) should contact mat@drownedinsound.com. Please post any suggestions of bands you suggest we put on in the comments section below...
