Radiohead's Phil Selway to release debut solo album
JoeDiddly by Luke Slater June 3rd, 2010

Right. Stop it. That's enough with the drummer jokes. Phil Selway, the man who beats the skins amongst other things in indie giants Radiohead, will release his debut solo album in August. The record is called Familial and will come out through Bella Union, with the date for that being August 30, so still a while to go yet.

Though we've not actually heard anything from it, whatsoever, the press release describes it as being as far away from a rock record as you can get, which is quite vague. It does then hint to say that the ballads aren't defined by folk and that the approach to percussion on the record is less 'drumming' more loops and stuff like that. Which is interesting.

Phil first 'went solo' back in 2001 for the 7 Worlds Collide project, on which he collaborated with a vast number of respected musicians, including Eddie Vedder and bandmate Ed O'Brien. This time he's got in Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg and Wilco drummer Glen Kotche to make the record with him, with Ian Davenport producing it.

Anyway, the album art is this little beauty. Reminds me of The Man Who Turned Into A Tree or whatever that programme was. Half Man Half Tree?!
