Faun Fables - Light of a Vaster Dark

Review by Noel Gardner

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay the latest Faun Fables album is that neither its ‘tuneful’ or ‘creepy’ parts sound more naturally achieved than the other, and that they sound like they’ve sprung from the well of a woman with a unique creative – and literal – voice.»

out of the glittering caverns of the soul crawls the sixth release of drag city recording artists faun fables, 'light of a vaster dark', a vibrant collection of songs and sounds excavated by songwriter dawn mccarthy and supported by steadfast collaborator nils frykdahl of sleepytime gorilla museum. this album sparkles with a fear, wonder and playfulness that faun fables have become known for: it meditates on the cyclical nature of light and darkness as revealed in the seasons of life, and in the beautiful power of stalwart and humble things like housekeeping, immigrant pioneers and a homely civic parade. amidst the solid, elemental structure of mccarthy and frykdahl's guitars and eclectic percussion whirl the violins of meredith yayanos and the multi-instrumental touches and vocals of kirana peyton; a continuation of the lush work with them from the 2008 ep release 'a table forgotten' (drag city). driven bass clarinets and shakuhachi flutes from cornelius boots and the rich harmonica tones of mark stikman complete the sound, with mccarthy's vocals at the helm, leading the swirling hive through the air like a valkyrie with the point of a blade.
