Frankie & the Heartstrings - The Days Run Away

Review by Marc Burrows

This is a collection of elegantly assembled, fat-free pop songs, made from light and air and heart, and great choruses. It's the soul and centre of indie pop and deserves your immediate attention.»

'The Days Run Away' was recorded during 2012 in Newcastle and London with former Suede figurehead and producer Bernard Butler. The band initially collaborated with Butler on a one off single 'Everybody Looks Better (In The Right Light)' released in November 2011. This successful partnership led Frankie and the Heartstrings to record their second album with Butler, the first fruits of their sessions was released in the form of downloadtrack 'I Still Follow You' last October. The eleven-track album continues the pursuit of guitar perfection they began withtheir debut 'Hunger' released in February 2011. 'The Days Run Away' maintains the Frankie and the Heartstrings tradition of songs that refuse to outstay their welcome - aprecise blend of passion and guitars, with enough new tricks to show that they've spent the last six months updating their book of indie nous. Lead off track 'Nothing Our Way' is the prime example of that - similar to the zealous and the fervent collectivism of their hit track 'Hunger' from their debut LP, but with an additional sense of scope and restrained grandeur. Elsewhere on the record, the track 'Light That Breaks' features a collaboration with Lets Buy Happiness vocalist Sarah Hall, as well as string arrangements from North Eastern compatriot Peter Brewis of Field Music.
