The album consists of "three pieces of a triadic whole" and celebrates the band's traditions: it was recorded and mixed with collaborator Randall Dunn and includes performances by Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, Steve Moore and others. 'Kannon' is their most outright metal album in years. The title comes from as aspect of Buddhism, and the band commissioned critical theorist Aliza Shvartz to write a text and liner notes around the subject.
