Redefine

Jennifer Cried

Label: Sugar Shack Records Release Date: 02/09/2002

2167
_adam_ by Adam Anonymous August 14th, 2002

Much rabid praise has been heaped upon the shoulders of young Bristol metal upstarts Redefine since they unleashed attention-grabbing debut LP ‘thedaisychaincycle’.

Sheer brute Deftones force circa ‘Adrenaline’, the melodic sensibilities of Lostprophets and a splash of Vex Red’s token electronics all combine to make ‘Jennifer Cried’ a pleasing racket, boasting a chorus tuneful enough to have A&R men creaming their collective strides. Some awesome distorted yelping Chino Moreno vocal histrionics midway through should soon put them off though.

And then at the precise moment it appears that Redefine can be hammered firmly into a pigeonhole labelled “emotional nu-metal”, they go and drop a double-barrelled tab of unpredictability juice.

‘Monkey Dojo’ chills, clicks and squeaks along with some spacey incomprehensible vocals and ‘A Whole New Year’ is uplifting sparse acoustic fodder of introspective fragility. Work that one out. A definite challenge for anyone bored with their record collection.
