Nine Black Alps

Not Everyone

Label: Island Release Date: 23/05/2005

leetle_john by John Winters May 19th, 2005

Ah, time was when all bands tried to sound like this. Not Everyone’s insidious four chord riff grabs you by the scruff of the neck like an angry father and drags you over three and a bit minutes of madly exciting scowl-rock. A quite simply fantastic pop song dressed in lo-fi grunge threads, it stands out perfectly in a current climate of bands who spend a bit too long styling their hair.

It may be lazy reviewing but it’s almost impossible to describe Nine Black Alps’ music without mentioning the N-word; they even wear plaid shirts for heaven’s sake. But they tap into the power of Seattle’s early nineties renaissance in a way that someone like the Vines never did, not least because Sam Forrest** has a far better voice. ‘Hey, you’re not the first, you’re not the last’ indeed. But for now it’ll do just nicely.

You can hear an exclusive stream of a bonus track from the single in the DiS media section now!
