Strange Idols

Doors/Failed Attempt At A Love Song

Label: Shady Lane Release Date: 03/10/2005

holliy by holliy October 13th, 2005

Strange Idols formed in early 2005, write three-minute pop songs with the dance floor in mind and don't believe in guitar solos - a philosophy which is clearly evident on this (their debut) single. These two songs of jangling indie guitar have enough bite and stylistic quirks to raise them above the typical, and also boast backing vocals worthy of a sixties diva. Sadly, however, the lo-fi recording has resulted in a too-toned-down sound, and in order to get at the songs it's necessary to do some severe listening past the production.

Fortunately for Strange Idols, they have in their favour the simple fact that those who can be bothered to hear beyond the mix quality will be well rewarded. Though they still come across as somewhat half-formed, this single has the taste of a band who're determined to raise themselves above the run of the mill. Although the guitars tend to get lost in the mix, odd unexpected flourishes on the drums point towards the innovation intended, the vocal harmonies have all the signs of Future Trademark Sound and the melody clatters and spikes in a very pleasing manner. All of which adds up to a band who could do something pretty special, pretty soon.
