Deerhunter - Rainwater Cassette Exchange

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

Following a leak that stopped Weird Era... becoming the fan surprise Cox had intended, the ever-whimsical frontman at one point suggested he might scrap it entirely; it’s as well he decided not to, as quite aside from it actually being the better of the twin records, Weird Era... was clearly more emblematic of the direction the band are headed in, if new EP Rainwater Cassette Exchange is owt to go by.»

Glastonbury 2009: DiS briefly shuts up, bands have their say

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

As you're doubtless getting bored/angry with the reams of subjective blather DiS has been throwing up over the UK's flagship festival, our mini Glastonbury preview week today hands the metaphorical mic to a selection of people who, er, know how to use a real one. All performing at the festival this year, Maximo Park's Paul Smith, Fucked Up's Damian Abraham, Emmy The Great and Broken Records' Ian Turnbull have all gallantly turned their little grey cells to pondering the meaning of the modern Glastonbury Festival.»

Hole are back! But not in the way you or anyone else would like!

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Some time around 2004, DiS got mildly excited when Courtney Love released her first single as a solo artist. Many would disagree, but 'Mono' was something of a choon, and hopes were medium high that parent album America's Sweetheart would be as fine an ou»

Glastonbury: an in no way excessive four-and-a-bit mixtape preview

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

Here's our per day mix of tips and recommendations for what to see at the festival, plus a bonus mix of IT WILL DEFINITELY BE SUNNY WEATHER music courtesy of our noble leader Sean Adams.»

The Lemonheads - Varshons

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

Dando fucks Varshons up just enough to stop it being an actively great covers record – in recent terms The Condo Fucks’ mighty Fuckbook stomps over it – but not enough to detract from the truth that the thread drawing the successful songs together is the still-beating talent of Evan Dando, non-dickhead version.»

What to see at Glastonbury: a rough and biased guide

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

Here’s a rough, rumour-soused guide offering some vague thoughts on what to do with your Glasto ’09 – please post tips, ideas, rumours and alternate suggestions below.»

Pixies play London gig! Seem to be having fun!

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Though the horribly ungrateful wannabe hipster part of DiS’s brain was annoyed to note that a leisurely early afternoon train to Brixton and some suspiciously fortuitous scheduling would have allowed us to see Blur’s Rough Trade gig first, it was with the»

DiScuss: So this 'Glastonbury' thing, eh..?

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

In celebration of managing to wheedle Glasto review tickets and a photopass for the first time (oh, and also it being one of the biggest musical and cultural events in the British calender), DiS is having a wee Glastonbury week this week, in advance of everybody actually going buggering off next Wednesday. We kick off with a ponder over what the festival is meant to mean to the average indie kid in 2009.»

Secret Blur gig happening in London tonight! Somewhere! Probably!

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Ah, Twitter, how did we come up with wishy washy gossip without you? Er, anyway, this morning Graham Coxon (or @GrahamCoxon as he is known in nerd land) quoth this: mornin all! "midlife..." is out today and to celebrate we're gonna play >some songs»

Popular Condo Meltdown: catching up with Yo La Tengo

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

With the tubes notionally back in order again, it’s time for London to be gripped by a rather more enjoyable Meltdown, the Southbank Centre’s annual shindig, this year curated by legendary jazz artist Ornette Coleman. He’ll be turning up at various points»

Little Boots - Hands

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

If – and it’s a hefty ‘if’ – there is any substance to the idea of 2009 playing host to a discernible trend in British female sing»

Latitude awesomeness now starts taking piss: Of Montreal and more join the fray

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Time was, the Latitude festival was just about smirkingly wondering if painting a sheep a lurid colour impinged upon its rights, and probably looking forward to seeing Stewart Lee as much - if not slightly more - than the pleasant haze of bands that garni»

Thom Yorke unleashed on Latitude as drinking deterrent

News by Andrzej Lukowski

DiS won't tell you precisely what we were up to when Joanna Newsom delighted the merrily coloured sheep and picturesque middle-class families of last year's Latitude festival with an early Sunday afternoon set of harp epics. Let's just say shame is involv»

Win tickets to see The Roots at Ornette Coleman's Meltdown Festival

News by Andrzej Lukowski

With mid to late June descending fast upon us, 'tis almost time for London's Southbank Centre to play host to its second big music festival of the year, Meltdown, this year curated by jazz legend Ornette Coleman. By means of commemoration, DiS would like»

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

I have a distinct sensation Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca might be one of the greatest albums ever made by man or beast, or it would be if its sheer brilliance wasn’t – on one level - so daunting. Time and time again Dave Longstreth’s songwriting throws up something madly, wonderfully oblique, something that not another songwriter would have thought of, let along successfully committed to disc; yet it feels kind of hard to love it in direct proportion the actual amount of genius that hums and crackles and pops from its every impossible angle. It is, let's be clear, still pretty lovable.»

DiScuss: Is this News? - Yours Truly, Indie Mob

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

So here is the DiScussion: should the indie online press – who I’d imagine to a person consider themselves morally above the gossip pages, tabloid rags and freesheets that cover equivalent events to the Wavves meltdown in the ‘real world’ – feel any sort of responsibility to keep perspective and balance in their reportage of such matters? Or is it just a harmless bit of fun? Or good online business? Are we basically Pitchfork's bitches, unable to pass a story they deem to be big news? Or have I wildly missed the mark in suggesting the incident – barely commented on in the actual Primavera thread – wasn’t a big deal? We’re all familiar with the build ‘em up, knock ‘em down cycle, but is it in any way fair that Nathan Williams is going to be saddled with a rep for years - if not his entire career – because Ryan Schreiber sent a couple of tweets as something to do?»

Various - Brand Neu!

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

By far the best recommendation you can give to this idiotically-conceived artefact is that it’ll probably really piss off Krautrock obsessives.»

B seein' ya: Plan B unveils its final cover

News by Andrzej Lukowski

As you're probably aware, the Apocalypse shuffled a few steps closer when it was last week announced that the June issue of Plan B magazine would be the last. While we at DiS are all still rocking back and forth numbly, reading mag founder Everett True's»

Shonky new Camden festival? Or convoluted Libertines reunion?

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Wow, a multi-venue festival in Camden! Now THAT is a concept and three quarters, that is. Hope the organisers of the new Camden Rocks one day festival have patented that bad boy. Anyway, it takes place next Saturday at The Prince Of Wales, The Monarch, »

Double Deal-ing: DiS reviews ATP Curated By The Breeders

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

After a somewhat brutal weekend (musically and physically) at ATP Vs The Fans Part II, it was with some trepidation that DiS loins were re-girded for its sister weekend. But actually we had a quite lovely time; maybe it was the more cohesive line up begat from having a proper curator; maybe it was something to do with it being sold out; probably it wasn’t the uber-tetchy security (um, did they spend so long looking over the top of the girls’ cubicles as the gents’?); whatever the case, a fine weekend, and one of the better overtly indie editions.»

Passion Pit - Manners

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

Manners - an album for the end of a decade nobody really notices is ending, college rock and electro pop synthesised into one likable bundle.»

Folkin' Out: Graham Coxon talks to DiS

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

Okay, let's get it over with - the very lovely Graham Coxon would probably have quite merrily talked to DiS about Blur (or jellybeans, or elephants, or sunbeans, or anything, really) for the entire length of this interview. His PR sitting in the same room... not so much. »

Future Of The Left's Travels With Myself And Another digitally available NOW

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Having proved themselves as adept at telling gags about confectionery as they are at rocking like bastards at last weekend's ATP Vs The Fans, Cardiff's angriest, Future Of The Left, follow up Falco's quite narked blog about their new album leaking of t'ot»

Wilco (the album stream)

News by Andrzej Lukowski

In what DiS's best but entirely unsubstantiated guess is a response to the recent leak of Wilco's drolly-titled seventh set Wilco (The Album), the entire kaboodle (due June 30) is now streaming online. DiS is off to the pub in a second and sort of feels »

ATP Vs The Fans Part II: The DiS Review

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

DiS's Dom Gourlay and Andrzej Lukowski descended upon the first UK ATP of '09 like two gods of yore. Sleep probably being what the gods of yore would listen to had stoner metal been around in yore. But enough musings on divinity: here's our high and low p»

Echo & The Bunnymen present: Ocean Rain 4: In Space

News by Andrzej Lukowski

Those of you with no true love of film as an artform will perhaps have missed the hi-larious reference in the title there. It is, of course, an allusion to Leprechaun 4: In Space, a dubious if quite amusing attempt to shore up an ailing entertainment fran»

ATP May '09: a DiS double mixtape preview

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

DiS has compiled a couple of Spotify mixtapes by way of preview/giving you a taste of some bands you may not have heard of/confirming the prejudices of people not going.»

The Maccabees - Wall Of Arms

Review by Andrzej Lukowski

Wall of Arms is more Arcade Fire-like than Arcade Fire clone, and you could comfortably sling in a little Echo & The Bunnymen, Head On The Door Cure and Wolf Parade by way of further comparison. »

Adventures at the edge of the world: DiS goes to Aldrei Fór Ég Suður

In Depth by Andrzej Lukowski

For the last five Mugison’s been running the free Aldrei Fór Ég Suður festival (literally ‘I never went south’) with help from various locals, most notably his father, Papa Muggi, harbour master to Ísafjörður and also, oddly, a professional karaoke singer.»
